Ebola virus outbreak has been reported in Kampala for the first time, with two cases reported and one person confirmed dead.

The victim reportedly died at Mulago Hospital.

This brings the death toll to 19 of which 18 were reported in Kibaale district where the out break first hit last week.

In a related development, President Museveni has come out and banned all physical contact with infected persons to avoid the spread of the disease during a state broadcast today.

“Ebola spreads by contact when you contact each other physically… avoid shaking of hands that can cause contact through sweat, which can cause problems,” Museveni added.

He went ahead and asked the ministry of health to trace all the people who had contact with the victims to be quarantined.

“Do not take on burying somebody who has died from symptoms that look like Ebola — instead call health workers because they know how to do it,” he said.

Seven doctors and 13 health workers at Mulago hospital are in quarantine after “at least one or two cases” were taken there, with one later dying from the virus.

It is reported that the disease first broke out three weeks ago in an extended family of Yostus Isoke of Nyanswiga village Nyamarunda Sub County, killing him and his other eleven family members.

A clinical officer at Kagadi hospital Clare Muhumuza who treated the family members and her four month old baby also succumbed to the virus on Tuesday and Saturday respectively.

An isolation ward has been established Kagadi hospital to avoid spread of the disease.

Some of the signs of Ebola include fever, diarrhea, passing out blood from all parts of the body, vomiting among others.[Only admins are allowed to see this link]
