A dissertation on Clinical Leadership Concept in Lebanon and the UK: A Comparative Analysis
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Problem Statement
During the last decade, there has occurred a drastic change in the field of economics, sociology and technology. In the past, leadership was not as necessary as it is today. This is because the current healthcare system works just like a business organization which requires a skilled leader to guide the organizational ship towards success. When considering the healthcare situations of Lebanon and the UK, distinction can definitely be seen as they both stand at different developmental stages. There is definitely a need to understand the situation of both the regions that will help to assess the leadership concept. In the UK, majority of the healthcare system is governed by the governmental authorities. On the other hand, the majority of health care is provided by private hospitals in Lebanon which are owned by either individuals or enterprises, the key managers such as the medical directors and Chief Executive Officers are clinicians. So the ideological and political framework of how the service works in the two countries by far, very different. .........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Clinical Leadership and Management: Definitions
Of the few authors recognizing clinical leadership as a leadership process occurring outside the traditional leadership role, Lett (2002) was the first to link clinical leadership with the practice of clinicians providing direct patient care. In this study, clinicians reported that they use clinical leader behaviors in their practice most of the time. They use leader behaviors which reflect the five leadership practices of Kouzes and Posner's (1995) leadership model and they demonstrate these behaviors in their daily practice. This is an important finding because clinicians play a central role in keeping patients safe (Tregunno, Jeffs, & McGillis Hall, 2009).
This study defined a clinical leader, as an expert clinician involved in providing direct patient care, influences, and coordinates patients, families and healthcare team colleagues for the purpose of integrating the care they provide to achieve positive patient outcomes. The research questions in this project help to describe and explore the healthcare phenomenon of clinical leadership. To understand this concept, the exploratory, descriptive and explanatory questions have been designed, namely
1. Do clinical leaders believe that their role is important in organizational structures, management and delivering of services?
2. What do you consider to be the most important motivation for a clinician/health care professional to purse leadership positions-Experience different challenges than clinical ones
3. Is there any difference between leadership and management concepts?
4. Are healthcare leaders held accountable for effectively carrying out their responsibilities?
5. Does medical leadership play an important role in developing healthcare service in any country?
6. What lies behind good medical leadership/clinical skills?
7. Do you think there are disadvantages for the clinicians who are in clinical leadership positions?
8. The questionnaire also tries to quantify this phenomenon and management practice of clinical leadership based on how numbers of staff can alter the quality of healthcare;
9. Do you support the ‘post-heroic’ model of leadership, which involves multiple actors who share leadership by working collaboratively?-leaders at many levels
10.
